It has been reported that a former electrician in Australia who was diagnosed with the asbestos cancer mesothelioma in 2008 recently won more than $500,000 in damages from a successful mesothelioma lawsuit. The man had worked as an electrician from 1969 to 1976. It is believed that he was exposed to asbestos at his job.
Thus far, he has had two surgeries, one of which was to remove part of his lung. Doctors estimate his life expectancy to be approximately 18 months. In ordering the man’s former employer to pay more than $500,000 in compensation, the court recognized that the man will suffer pain as a result of his former employer’s failure to warn of the dangers of asbestos or to provide protective equipment to prevent asbestos exposure.
About Mesothelioma Cancer
Malignant mesothelioma is almost always caused by exposure to asbestos. People at high risk of developing mesothelioma and other asbestos cancers are those who worked with asbestos containing products. These workers include mechanics, sheet metal workers, plumbers, electricians and carpenters. Mesothelioma symptoms appear decades after asbestos exposure has taken place. They include difficulty breathing, coughing of blood, abdominal swelling and night sweats.
Among the various types of mesothelioma are peritoneal mesothelioma and pleural mesothelioma. When mesothelioma affects the lining of the lungs, it is known as pleural mesothelioma or lung mesothelioma. When it affects the lining of the abdominal cavity, it is known as peritoneal mesothelioma. Currently, there is no cure for mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma treatment approaches such as radiation or immunotherapy are generally most successful when applied during the early stages of mesothelioma. Unfortunately however, in many cases, mesothelioma is diagnosed when it is already at an advanced stage. This is largely because mesothelioma symptoms generally take decades to develop.
