It has been reported that the widow of a former Navy officer who passed away from malignant mesothelioma cancer earlier this year won about $6 million in a mesothelioma case. Defendants in the lawsuit were John Crane Inc. and Garlock Sealing Technologies.
The mesothelioma lawsuit alleged that the asbestos exposure that led to the former officer’s mesothelioma occurred on board a cruiser in which he had served. It is also likely that he was exposed to asbestos fibers when he served on other ships from the 1950s through the 1970s.
According to the mesothelioma lawsuit, asbestos-containing products made by John Crane and Garlock Sealing Technologies were provided to the shipyard at which the deceased officer had worked. The jury found that both companies were equally liable for the deceased officer’s mesothelioma cancer. Of the approximately $6 million total verdict, $2 million was awarded for the officer’s pain and suffering, $1.15 million was for the loss suffered by his wife, $2.5 million was for the loss of future income and $327,000 was for medical and funeral expenses.
Malignant mesothelioma cancer is almost always caused by exposure to asbestos. Two types of mesothelioma are pleural mesothelioma and peritoneal mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the lungs and is therefore often referred to as lung mesothelioma. Symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include chest pain, difficulty breathing, night sweats and weight loss. Peritoneal mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the abdomen and its symptoms include abdominal swelling, fatigue and anemia. Frequently, mesothelioma symptoms do not appear for decades after exposure to asbestos. Unfortunately, when symptoms do appear, treatment options are usually limited.
