It has been reported that the daughter of a former construction worker won a $5.2 million verdict in a mesothelioma cancer case. Malignant mesothelioma is an asbestos cancer that is caused from exposure to asbestos fibers. Asbestos exposure frequently occurs by inhalation and often takes place in the workplace. Workers such as mechanics, construction workers, electricians and sheet metal workers are at risk of being exposed to asbestos at work and developing mesothelioma.

In the case of the daughter of the former construction worker, she developed mesothelioma while working with her father. Her father worked with an asbestos-containing joint compound. Her father would shave down walls and she would clean up the dust that was left behind. It is highly probable that the dust contained asbestos fibers that she inhaled.

Mesothelioma often develops decades after exposure to asbestos has taken place. The disease can affect the lungs (pleural mesothelioma or lung mesothelioma) or the abdomen (peritoneal mesothelioma). Symptoms of mesothelioma include abdominal swelling, difficulty breathing, coughing blood, night sweats, fever and weight loss. There are different stages of mesothelioma. The stages describe the extent to which the cancer has spread. Presently, there is no cure for mesothelioma. Mesothelioma treatment techniques that have shown some degree of success include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and photodynamic therapy. Treatment techniques tend to be more successful when the mesothelioma is at an earlier stage.
