It has been reported that $1.48 million has been awarded to the estate of a former painter who passed away from the asbestos cancer, malignant mesothelioma in May 2006 at the age of 75. Mesothelioma cancer is caused by exposure to asbestos. Asbestos exposure frequently occurs by inhalation of asbestos fibers. Asbestos fibers are typically not visible to the human eye and can remain suspended in air for long periods, thereby increasing the risk of inhalation. Usually, asbestos exposure occurs in job settings. Workers at risk of developing mesothelioma include mechanics, sheet metal workers, plumbers and construction workers.
In the case of the former painter, he was exposed to asbestos at his workplace. The man worked near asbestos-containing brakes. It is believed that he inhaled dust from the brake linings. The dust subsequently led to the development of mesothelioma. Mesothelioma cancer has a long latency period. The cancer often develops decades after exposure to asbestos has taken place. To make matters worse, mesothelioma symptoms often do not manifest until the cancer has advanced significantly. In many cases, by the time people are diagnosed with mesothelioma, the cancer has progressed to such an advanced stage that treatment options are of limited effectiveness.
When mesothelioma affects the lining of the abdomen, it is called peritoneal mesothelioma and when it affects the lining of the lungs, it is known as pleural mesothelioma or lung mesothelioma. There is no cure for mesothelioma at the present time but there are some mesothelioma treatment techniques that have helped some people suffering from the cancer. Some of these treatment approaches are immunotherapy, radiation, chemotherapy and photodynamic therapy (PDT).These treatment approaches are generally more successful if applied during a relatively early stage of mesothelioma.
